Whats in a name..

In case you didn't know, my real name is Mahjabeen. Its not some huge-ass secret and neither is mayG my blogging alias in particular.
I've been known as mayG from the time I was a baby who'd drink Meiji Formula Milk :P and have indeed come a long way from there – changed the spelling in one of those teenage identity crisis modes because mayG sounded cooler than meiji and have come to be known thus, not only by friends, family and in-laws but even the faculty at my university!

As a little girl I used to absolutely hate the way my name sounded so filmy and old-fashioned. My parents had meant it to be Mehjabeen but I absolutely insisted that my name be pronounced with an "a" and not an "e" to mellow down the paindoo factor!
Added to the un-cool name was the embarrassment when every once in a few years there would come a bollywood number featuring the dreaded "mehjabeen" word! No fun really when all the girls in the school bus would look at me and snigger as the famous mehjabeen hit blared on in the background and the poor mehjabeen in question sat blushing and hanging her head in shame for the filmy name and the horrors it had in store.. If only she knew it wouldn’t be half as bad when she grows up and her knight in shining armor would sing the same songs and she'd be blushing for another reason ;)

…by the way, we really should have a ban on stupid movie songs played in school busses!

So one of the advantages of the very poetic sounding name, it turned out was that you could find a dozen songs sung in your name... It gets even better when you have *ahem* His Romeo-ness belting them out to you!

Much as I can whine and crib that the romance in our lives has taken a backseat because "heck! life happened along the way.." I have these fond (err.. corny?) memories I can always go back to.. those of getting a cassette with every song that was ever made with the mehjabeen word in it to those of being treated to all the mehjabeen numbers in a private concert meant for my ears only to a performance on the Ghazal Night stage at the university.. sigh yeah we used to be a pair of hopeless romantics..

Here, I happen to have a recording of the Ghazal Night performance.. yayy! Happy Listening!

Edited to add:
Just found out that IE is acting up and doesn't play the clip..(why am I not surprised :|)Dear IE users hang in there till I find time to fix the issue... OK I tried something but now mozilla wasn't all that happy.. don't laugh if you can see two audio players and don't cry of you see none... and just in case you need to get a life and can't seem to wait meanwhile, you can download the little clip here. As a web developer please consider my plea and switch to google chrome or mozilla firefox, you have to use it once to know what you've been missing out on all along!

..oh and some pictures too.. Too bad nobody thought it necessary to click a pic or two of the mehjabeen being floored with the antics.. but you can check out the love-struck Romeo in action :P

Oh and that's Ahad on the guitar.. thanks dude.. I remember how when UTP went for the jam and innocently said he wanted to sing Aafrin Aafrin you said sure..it was just short of the mehjabeen part that you stopped strumming, threw your head back and laughed that signature ahad laugh and exclaimed "kuttay! now i know what you're up to!" ...here's some more of ahad in action.

hey MaH-Jabeen (moon face) is way better than MEH-Jabeen (liquour face)...I get (similarly) ticked off at the MahVash /Mehvesh confusion.
So sweet and romantic to be seranaded like this....nothing/no one comes up with anything with aneela in.

MayG, you ARE a hopeless romantic. Admit it. Its you who should be saying that in 'capital letters and all' :D

(I'm a blurker but I had to come out of hiding to say this; this is the sweetest post ever!)

May Allah keep you two happy like this forever! :)

@sidhusaaheb- LOL @ paindoo and proud of it!!
Yeah for a split second I did have an uncomfortable feeling about taking this particular piece of information to the blog but thought what the heck, we'll take the blog private as soon as the kids are old enough to pry around mom and dad's blog!

@mona- hehe hope you managed to listen to it now.

@raymshma- aww you poor baby that reshmaaa is really loud for anybody to miss!!

@anon- :$

@fariha- hmm.. story mein twist.. ab yeh tou us say hi poochna parey ga! but according to him with this one verse he can make all the women in his life happy! it has names of his mom, sis and myself in a single line.. yes we are a bunch of ladies with filmee names :D

@sheza- aww sweet you're making me blush!

@ritu- hehe yeah I've learnt to like my name now!

@aneela- umm no aneela mehjabeen is infact the moon-faced one or the forehead of the moon to be precise.. there's no such word as mahjabeen in the urdu dictionary.
wine is "mai" not "meh".. OK bhaashan over, have you tried to convince Gman to sing "aneela aasman sou gya!" and "aneelay aneelay ambar par.." OR
how about "aneela dupatta peela suit.. kahan chali tu dil ko loot!"

@lubna- thanks girl :)

@misspecs- aye ma'am! guilty as charged :D

Heyyyy MG..wish we had checked with you ummm 30 years ago...somewhere in Peshawar is a cousin with the same name as you who had been convinced to be a Mah rather than a Meh for the same reason..damn us Pathans get conned everytime..
Naheeeeeee dont bring up the Neela reference...major trauma...most of the family cannot pronounce aneela (reasons above) so Im called NEEEEEELLA by anoyone plus 40 or ALEELA if they try to get their tongues around it...and Aleena by the kiddies. Imagine being picked up by aunt in school and the teacher turning around and saying Someone here to get Neela, class is there a Neela in the room...sob sob I still get nighmares.
the in-laws call me ONEELA....Im looking into name changes.

Hi Mehjabeen (U might hate me for using this name but just couldnt help doing so after reading this) -I came across this blog of urs through my best freind.
Well my father for some reason LUVED the name QURATULAIN which was chosen for me, though for some reason people started calling me Annie (Which sounded pretty cool as it is so I never got to reformat the nick name) :D
Anyways, since im working now I have realized that boring ol Quratulain kind of gives a dead beat image which is good to show off at those who get on ur nerves at work and i keep "ANNIE" for freinds and family :)

Besides... Desi hain tu kiya howa girl. We are different arent we? ;)

PS: Awesome Blog *thumbsup*
